If you watched MD1 from a Lagos viewing centre, a WhatsApp group, or with one eye on live scores and the other on your Goborr picks, you already know what happened. The opening round of WAFCON 2026 in Morocco did not move in a straight line. Malawi stunned Nigeria. Zambia hit Egypt for six. Tanzania beat South Africa. Morocco sent a message at home. On Goborr, 55 predictors called 8 fixtures, and the leaderboard punished anyone who trusted reputation more than the game in front of them.

    The MD1 angle

    • Nigeria 2-3 Malawi was the result of the round on and off the pitch. Not one Goborr predictor called the outcome from 52 picks.
    • Zambia 6-0 Egypt turned Barbra Banda into the story of the night. Four goals in 30 minutes, then a penalty to finish the rout.
    • Morocco 4-0 Kenya was the only fixture where every predictor got the outcome right. Hosts look ready for another deep run.
    • Semi-finalists in Morocco qualify for Brazil 2027. Group games already feel like knockout football.

Nigeria 2-3 Malawi fooled every single Goborr predictor. Not one away win in fifty-two picks. That is MD1 in one sentence.

    WAFCON 2026

Malawi 3-2 Nigeria: Super Falcons stunned on WAFCON debut day

The Super Falcons opened their title defence at Al Medina Stadium in Rabat and left with their first opening-day defeat at WAFCON since 2012. Malawi, making their tournament debut, turned the Chawinga sisters into national heroes. Temwa Chawinga scored in the 75th and 90+5th minutes. Tabitha Chawinga added another in the 79th. Rasheedat Ajibade and Uchenna Kanu scored late for Nigeria, but the Scorchers held on for a 3-2 win that shook Group C.

On Goborr, the damage was total. Zero percent of predictors called a Malawi win. Defending champions, ten-time winners, favourites on paper, and not one person in our room read the upset. If you picked Nigeria to win comfortably, you were in the majority. If you trusted the underdog, you were alone, and you probably won the bragging rights even if you missed the exact score.

Round 1 across the groups: Zambia, Morocco, Tanzania

Earlier on Tuesday, Zambia demolished Egypt 6-0 at the Rabat Olympic Stadium. Barbra Banda scored four times before the hour, then added a penalty deep in stoppage time. The Copper Queens top Group C on goal difference. Malawi sit second. Nigeria and Egypt have work to do before MD2.

Hosts Morocco beat Kenya 4-0 on Sunday night in front of a packed Moulay El Hassan Stadium. Ibtissam Jraidi scored twice, and Morocco look like a team that expects to go deep again. Algeria beat Senegal 2-0 in the earlier kick-off. Group A already has a North African derby on the horizon when Morocco meet Algeria on 30 July.

Group B produced its own twist. Tanzania beat South Africa 2-1 in Casablanca, with Hasnath Ubamba sealing the win in the 86th minute. Only 4% of Goborr predictors called the away win. Ivory Coast beat Burkina Faso 4-1 in the late game. Group D closed with Ghana beating Cape Verde 2-0 and Cameroon edging Mali 2-1.
